We’re white. As a family that is attempting allyship, we are attempting to raise Rowan to be an antiracist. Since stories help us all imagine a better world, we are filling our home with books written by diverse authors, illustrated by diverse artists, and feature stories about diverse people.

I have two book recommendations for other parents who are seeking to do the same.

This board book is one of Row’s favorites. It’s got an important message and great illustrations. It’s also got some great rhyme schemes which is an important building block for literacy.

A Kids Book About Racism by Jelani Memory

This one is written directly to the child reader. It’s meant to inspire conversation between parents and their kids. I really love the care Jelani gives while being honest about his own experiences with racism. It explains it very well for our kids (and for us).
